Reflection Of Do The Right Thing

Out of all of the character in the script for Do The Right Thing I'd have to say that the character that I relate to the most would have to be Mother Sister. The reason that I relate to her the most is that she is just the person who watches over everyone else, like a friend who watches out for you. I feel as though i am the same way with all of my friends. I'm the person who makes sure that everyone is alright. The character that I feel as though I relate to the least in most likely Sal. The reason I think I am least like Sal is because Sal is way to prone to being violent or even wanting to resort to violence. For example, whenever someone disagrees with him on basically anything he breaks out his baseball back, preparing to hurt someone else and I am nothing like that.

There are a lot of point in the play where character are torn in deciding what the right and wrong thing to do in different scenarios. For instance, when Sal broke Radio Raheem's boombox. Sal had a choice and in my opinion he chose wrong. He should not have gone as far as he had as to break the only important item that Radio Raheem owned and cherished. However, other characters in the script do the right thing. For example, Mother Sister, she is the person who can be seen helping others and watching out for them, making sure that they are not getting in trouble.

According to the script the right thing to do is to stand up for yourself as well as for others. The way I see it is when the police officers came and started freaking out with Radio Raheem and then when he died the whole neighborhood banded together and while they did not do the right thing by burning down the pizzeria they showed true loyalty to their friends that day. The right that they they could have done instead of resorting to the extreme measures that they did was handle the situation peacefully by reporting the officers or something of that sort, because instead they handled the situation rather radically.

Do The Right Thing

Do the right thing had a multitude of different themes going on throughout the play. The most obvious one was the difference between right and wrong. This theme was constantly occurring on who was right during all of he different scenarios. Some of these scenarios were easier to pick a side on to argue about whereas, some of the situations it was difficult to pick a way to argue about. Another theme that appeared multiple times throughout the script was the theme of Caucasian versus African American. Due to the fact that the neighborhood in the script is primarily African American with only 3 or 4 caucasian character there tends to be a bit of friction especially regarding a character named Pino. Pino is a Italian Caucasian man who works at his fathers pizzeria. Pino is very racist and likes to mock or pick on an African American man named Mookie who works there. These are only two of many themes that are happening. The setting is in Brooklyn and the scenes are constantly changing from a pizza parlor to a front apartment stoop to a a convenient store. The characters that are present at each location differ as well. The overall basis of the script though is that after an encounter with the police officers a person of color ends up dead. In this case it is a well known character named Radio Raheem. The citizens of the neighborhood create an uproar in light of his death by dramatically burning down the pizzeria that that was owned by the Italian family in the neighborhood.

The Basis for English 1001

English is such an interesting subject. For me the reason that i love english class is partially because of my fondness for reading, but also because i actually enjoy writing. I like to write because then i can express my opinion through it.
