A Place To Stand
A Place To Stand is a very interesting novel based on The life and struggles of the author, Jimmy Santiago Baca. A scene that really stood out was when Baca's mother just dropped them off and ran off to California with her boyfriend. The reason why that seemed so like such an important detail in the reading was because it was the turning point in Baca's life. It was such a pivotal moment that he keeps on referring back to. It all came down to his mother leaving. Due to that he got moved around from his grandparents home at first then to he orphanage with the nuns and finally to a juvenile detention center. It was around that time that Baca started school and found that he was very behind in academics, but excelled in football. He stayed at school for a while until he dropped out. Throughout all of the stuff he had endured his brother had for the most part stayed his rock. He went with his brother everywhere so when he showed up at the detention center Baca left with him. It was after he left the detention center did he really start getting into fights and drinking and smoking. He did that for years with his brother until one day they split off and went there own ways. baca had some moments in his life where he would get on his feet for a while and hold down a job, but they never lasted. One day Baca found out that his mother had moved back in town and went to her house. She was living the fancy life and had a big house and kids and she introduced her other children to Baca as "a friend". It was hard for Baca because he had always had a small hope that his mother would come back for him and his siblings, but in reality she just dumped them and forgot about them.
